OVERVIEW: The UGST [Fizik‑1] is a Russian heavyweight 533 mm submarine-launched torpedo introduced in 2003. It is a universal thermal homing weapon designed to engage both submarines and surface ships.

DETAILS: Known officially as UGST (Russian: Универсальная Глубоководная Самонаводящаяся Торпеда, “Universal Deep‑sea Homing Torpedo”), the Fizik‑1 entered service in 2003 after trials beginning in the late 1990s. It measures 7.2 m in length, weighs between 1 980 and 2 200 kg, and features pump‑jet propulsion powered by Otto Fuel II, achieving speeds up to 50–60 kn with a kinematic range up to 50 km. The torpedo uses wire guidance along with active/passive acoustic homing and wake homing sensors, carrying a warhead up to 300 kg of high explosive.

TYPE: Heavyweight universal deep-water thermal homing torpedo

FUNCTION: Launched from 533 mm submarine tubes, UGST employs wire-guidance for mid-course control, then uses active/passive sonar and wake detection to autonomously locate and engage submerged or surface targets with its 300 kg warhead.
